There are two ways to appear on Google: earn a place in organic results (SEO) or buy one in ads (SEA, or paid search). Their costs, timelines and staying power differ. This guide explains the difference simply, what each costs a Belgian small business and how to choose or combine them.
What is the difference between SEO and SEA?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization, or organic search optimisation) means improving your website so it appears in Google's free results. SEA (Search Engine Advertising, or paid search) means buying ads that appear above or below those results. SEO builds over time; paid search stops when the budget stops.
You can recognise both on a results page: ads carry a “Sponsored” label, organic results do not. The same person might click either; what changes is who pays for the click and how long you stay visible.
What is SEA?
SEA is advertising on search engines, mainly Google Ads in Belgium. You choose keywords, write ads and set a budget; you generally pay for each click, at a price set by auctions between advertisers. Your ad appears at launch and disappears when you stop paying.
The cost per click depends on keyword competition, the quality of your ad and the page it leads to. For highly competitive searches (insurance, lawyer, renovation), it can cost several euros; for precise local searches, much less. Google explains the mechanism in its auction help guide.
What is SEO?
SEO includes everything that helps Google understand your website and judge it useful: pages that precisely answer what your customers search for, a fast and well-built website, links from other websites recommending you and, for a local business, a polished Google Business Profile. The click costs you nothing.
The three areas of SEO:
- Content: a page for each real customer need, answering it better than the alternatives.
- Technical work: speed, mobile experience and pages Google can crawl and index.
- Authority: links and mentions from other websites, and regular Google reviews for local SEO.
Which gives an SME a better return: SEO or paid search?
In the long term, SEO generally gives a better return: a well-ranked page attracts visitors for months with no cost per click. Paid search gives a better return in the short term, when you need enquiries straight away, for a seasonal offer or a launch. Most small businesses benefit from combining both.
Compare them on four criteria:
- Timeline: paid search is visible the same day; SEO generally needs several months to deliver results.
- Cost: paid search costs money with every click; SEO costs time or a service provider's fee, but clicks are free.
- Duration: paid search switches off with the budget; a good SEO ranking lasts while the page remains useful.
- Measurement: paid search is easy to measure click by click; SEO is tracked in Search Console over weeks.
Should you run SEO and paid search together?
Yes, in many cases. Paid search brings enquiries from the first month while SEO builds; ad data also shows which keywords really convert, guiding SEO content. When a page ranks well for a search, you can reduce the advertising budget for that keyword.
A simple starting rule: a small paid search budget for your most profitable services and your town, plus an SEO content plan addressing the questions your customers ask. Review every three months.
