We joined a CEO storytelling bootcamp: 5 lessons that changed everything

We're a web agency. We code websites, design user experiences and optimise SEO. We're not personal development coaches. And yet, this month, we put down our screens and went to bootcamp: an intensive programme on storytelling, management and CEO leadership.
The question we were asked in the very first hour: “Do you know why you do what you do?”
Spoiler: the answer we'd prepared wasn't the right one.
What exactly is your WHY?
Simon Sinek popularised it with his famous “Start With Why”: the most inspiring leaders don't start by explaining what they do or how they do it. They start with why. Not commercial targets or a corporate mission, but the deeper meaning, the conviction that gets you out of bed every morning.
For an agency like Eazyclick, the WHAT is easy: we create websites. The HOW too: integrated design + development + SEO. But the WHY? That's where it gets interesting, and where the bootcamp challenged us.
The joy zone: finding your fuel
One of the most powerful sessions explored what we called “the joy zone”: the intersection of what you do better than anyone, what drives you deeply and what the world really needs. This isn't a fluffy personal development exercise. It's a powerful strategic tool.
When a CEO is clearly in their joy zone, it shows in their decisions, the way they recruit, what they turn down as much as what they accept. Above all, you feel it in the team's culture.
5 lessons we're taking away
1. Your personal story is your strongest sales argument. Not your list of services, prices or references. What led you to do what you do, the obstacles you overcame and the convictions that guided you: that is what creates an authentic connection with your customers.
2. Flat corporate storytelling kills trust. “We are a passionate team of professionals committed to delivering innovative solutions.” Dead on arrival. People can spot inauthenticity from 10 km away. A true anecdote, an acknowledged failure, a moment of doubt overcome: these say infinitely more.
3. A good CEO talks to their team before their customers. The WHY must be understood collectively before it is expressed externally. If your team doesn't understand why they do what they do, your external communications will always sound a little hollow.
4. Message clarity is a skill you can train. We spent time on rephrasing exercises: saying the same thing in one sentence, then in 10 seconds, then adjusting the tone for the person we were addressing. It's like a muscle. It improves with practice.
5. Your “why” evolves, and that's normal. The WHY we had when we launched Eazyclick isn't exactly the same today. Experiences, customers and projects such as Thorgal.com help it mature and become clearer. What matters isn't setting your WHY in stone, but continuing to ask the question.
Why we're sharing this
Because this newsletter isn't only about techniques and tools. It's about building a business that lasts. And a lasting business has founders who know why they do what they do, and can communicate it clearly and authentically.
If you've never really thought about your WHY, it may be the best investment you can make right now.
